PEA ISLAND PRESERVATION SOCIETY, INC.
Freedmen, Surfmen, Heroes
The Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. has created a new initiative, “Freedmen, Surfmen, Heroes”, which includes a live presentation that’s done in a fun and exciting way. We share the important and heroic role that surfmen played in the Outer Banks and highlight the unity that occurred between black and white surfmen here decades ago at an unexpected time in American history. This unique story is one that the community, the state and the nation can be proud of. For the past year we have been sharing this story with all 4th graders in Dare County and to locals and visitors at the North Carolina Aquarium. Our goal is to make this unique part of our Outer Banks history broadly known throughout the state and beyond.

We would really appreciate financial donations to help fund travel expenses for our presentations and to expand the museum to allow room for on sight
presentations to visitors and a media room for school children to research this and other outstanding contributions to our maritime history on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Donations are tax deductible and can be made via our website or you may mail us a check payable to Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. or PIPSI.

We are enthusiastically seeking new members, especially those with a special connection to the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the U.S. Coast Guard AND we are in great need of volunteers to help staff the Cookhouse Museum in the spring and summer and during special events.
